Jordan Howell serves as the Research Coordinator for the Evidence-Based Cybersecurity Research Group. Howell is a criminology doctoral candidate at the University of South Florida. Howell uses his background in digital forensics and criminology to research intervention methods on dark web markets.
Howell recently conducted an experiment that tested the effectiveness of distrust in markets. “My latest project examines if, and to what extent, distrust disrupts illicit online markets,” Howell said. Howell discovered that distrust in the dark web markets impacts the revenue that the market is able to generate over a stipulated time period. “By using a natural experimental design, I find that once distrust enters a marketplace the market’s revenue is cut in half.”
