
The City of Atlanta awoke to a real-life nightmare on March 22, 2018. Overnight, unknown cybercriminals had attacked municipal government computer systems. At 5:40 a.m., when early-bird customers tried to pay their water bills, the system failed to respond. Atlanta Police Department officials tapped keyboards in frustration, unable to process reports. The ransomware attack clogged sewer infrastructure requests and brought the gavel down on local court proceedings.
